Surprise Luau -30yr- Hula Shirt Invites
Mandy in Fishers, Indiana, USA
For my husband's 30th Birthday I threw him a Surprise Luau Party. I started (with the help of a good friend) by making the invitation. We made hawaiian shirts out of hawaiian scrapbooking paper. We found a book at the scrapbook store that showed how to make shirts. We put the shirts on the front of the card with the word ALOHA stamped at the bottom of the card. We used a sunshine for the O in ALOHA. On the inside I printed out the details of the party on my computer and glued them into the card.
For the party I ordered various luau decorations from KIPP Brothers and Oriental Trading company; which included: table top tiki torches grass table skirt, leis, coconut bra, and other assorted decorations. For the tables I purchased more scrapbook paper as a mat to put under the table top tiki torches. I used assorted colors for the tables and dinnerware.
At the party I served pork skewers, rice, steamed vegetables, shrimp cocktail, coconut shrimp (from a Joe's Crab Shack), pineapple skewers with maraschino cherries and mandarin oranges. I purchased different dipping sauces for the pork. The pork was a big hit. I found the recipe on foodtv.com. I served hawaiian punch with 7-up in it just to be funny as well as iced-tea.
The hi-lite of the evening was the enormous pig cake that a friend made for me. She turned to 9x13 cakes (both different flavors to give people a choice) into a big pib lying its side. We then put a wedge of an apple in its mouth to look like a true roasted pig.
We played games all evening (my husband's favorite thing to do). To the winner I gave a grass skirt and a coconut bra as the prize. For the runners up I gave coconut cups and sea shell coasters, which came with my table decorating package from KIPP brothers. Everyone had a great time, and I had a lot of fun planning it. My husband was so surprised!
