For my Dads 60th surprise birthday bash, I decided to rent a banquet room at a Hotel so it would be convenient for all the out of town guests (some from Europe).  I hired a DJ and did it old western style theme since thats Dads favorite type of music. I collected trivia questions from 1943 to 60's and the DJ kept track of who got the most questions right and they got a prize. I had him do the questions thru out the evening to make it spontaneous. I also did the memory jar which I asked people to do in advance on the invitations so that way they wouldnt feel pressured into thinking of something at the party.  There were some really qood memories, quotes and jokes that the DJ read aloud and everyone had a great time!! My parents even danced the first dance to get everyone on the dance floor (like at weddings) and it was so memorable!! The best part was after the party where everyone went to the hotel lobby and continued to reminisce until 3AM! I think Dad is still recovering!
