50th Surprise - Elvis & Poodle Skirts

On January 25, 2003 I will be holding a surprise 50th birthday party for my husband.  The theme is a "dance 'til you drop sock hop".  I have rented a small hall for the evening and have a 50's DJ playing continuous tunes.  I made centerpieces using old 45's, candles that look like soda glasses, and pink, black and white balloons. 

Each place setting will receive a pair of sunglasses and a bag of "Mikey's Munchies" (small pink bags tied with a black ribbon holding all my husband's favorite candies from the 50's).  Each guest will also have an opportunity to complete a trivia quiz (printed on pink paper) covering 50's television, movies, sports, and singers. 

For decorations I am assembling a 10' guitar, a 10' cola bottle, and an 8' couple sock hop dancing.  The rest of the decorations will consist of pink, black and white balloon arches which are so easy to make. 

The menu will consist of my husband's favorite 50's food burgers, cheeseburgers, coney dogs, chicken wings, onion rings, fries, and coleslaw.  Instead of a cake, a large sundae bar will be available allowing guests to make their own treats.  Old sodas will be served grape nehigh, cherry cokes, orange crush, etc. 

The DJ is also a professional dancer, so the stroll, hustle, cha cha slide, and twist will all be taught. We also have planned a hula hoop contest. 

For prizes, I found old lunch boxes (Coke, I Love Lucy, Betty Boop) and have filled them with old-fashioned candies, A&W certificates, and other nostalgic items. 

To top everything off, all guests are asked to dress in 50's clothing.  Everyone seems to be getting into the excitement so far we have two men who want to dress as Elvis, and many women coming in poodle skirts. 

Can't wait for the evening to start!
